Bear Grylls RIB Raid Signals the Start of RIBEX 2010
May 2010
Suzuki continued its strong start to the new boating season with its sponsorship of the RIBEX powerboat show in Cowes and by using the event to display a wide range of its ultimate four stroke outboard motors.
The show opened with a flurry of on water activity on Friday 7th May as TV adventurer Bear Grylls took part in a high speed ‘RIB raid’ across the Solent from Gunwharf Quays to Cowes Yacht Haven in order to officially open the show.
Bear and event organiser, Hugo Montgomery-Swan, dashed across the Solent in two 7m Coastline RIBs, both of which were powered by one of Suzuki’s big block 175hp four stroke outboards.
Once the starting claxon sounded and the throttles were opened in earnest it was only a matter of minutes before Bear, Hugo and the fleet of following RIBs entered Cowes Yacht Haven to be greeted by crowds of RIB enthusiasts lining the marina wall.
The duo swiftly disembarked their RIBs and made their way around the marina to the Suzuki stand where Bear proceeded to cut the ribbon and declare the show officially open.
Bear said, “It was a pleasure to come and open RIBEX 2010. I love boats and this show, so I was only too pleased to answer the call from Hugo and my friends at Suzuki. The RIB raid across the Solent was great fun, which is what boating is all about”.
The show was a great success with plenty of Suzuki powered craft available on the water for customers to try. There were boats from domestic boat builders such as; Coastline, Humber, Redbay, Ribcraft, Ribquest and Solent RIBs as well as European brands such as; Capelli and Stingher.
Nearly half of all the outboard motors on display at the show were Suzuki’s and this clearly illustrated that it has an outboard for every level of the RIB market. From the new lightweight 60hp that was powering the Ribcraft 4.8m right up to the twin 300hp V6 rig that Bear Grylls has chosen for his new 10m Ribquest, Suzuki demonstrated that it has an outboard for every application.
Gareth Lumsdaine, Sales and Marketing Manager for Suzuki’s Marine Division said, “We are proud to be the title sponsor of RIBEX and thoroughly enjoy exhibiting at this show as it enables our retail customers to get out on the water and try the products. We are very grateful to Bear for getting involved in the RIB raid and opening the show. It created a real buzz which was carried through the rest of the weekend despite the weather”.
